Once that’s settled, the museum will use the reinvestment model to create a heritage reserve study so it can be more financially prepared for its future preservation needs. He compares the heritage building reinvestment model—a set of guidelines which, when implemented, is called a heritage building reserve study—to the routine of replacing the tires on a car. “You know they’re going to wear out, and you know they’re good for 40,000 miles; 50,000; or whatever,” he says. Reuse of existing buildings is often far less material- and energy-intensive than demolition and new construction.

One of the main environmental benefits of reusing buildings is the retention of the original building’s “embodied energy.” New buildings require new concrete, wood, and steel to be produced and transported to the site. By reusing buildings, their embodied energy is retained, making the project much more environmentally sustainable than entirely new construction. Such projects are an important component in ensuring community cohesiveness, which in turn improves the quality of life for West Hollywood residents. Cultural resources, with their charm and character, make West Hollywood an appealing place to live and work. Many of the major landmarks that distinguish West Hollywood from surrounding communities are cultural resources. The cultural resources extant in West Hollywood give the city its special character and cultural depth. Some cultural resources contain information whose study can provide unique insights about the community’s past, and help answer broad questions about history. In more utilitarian terms, each historic building represents an investment that should not be discarded lightly. Maintaining and rehabilitating older buildings and neighborhoods can offer savings in energy, time, money, raw goods and materials.
A National Trust Grant Helps the Heurich House Think Ahead
This historic preservation project is our birthday gift to America,” Bradburn said. Many of the homes in the Greenwich Village Historic District are unique and do not correspond with a specific architectural style. One such home is Trinity Manor, a rowhouse dating back to 1852, which features segmentally arched windows in a unique polygonal bay. These floor-to-ceiling parlor windows allow for scores of natural light to sweep throughout the floor.
There are many benefits of historic preservation to West Hollywood, in addition to the more traditional goals of preserving buildings for architectural or cultural reasons. With the tourism, interior design, and film industries playing important roles in the economy, West Hollywood’s cultural resources create an inviting and attractive built environment for the business community. Familiar landmarks also establish a sense of permanence and well-being for residents. Preservation begins with cultural resources and the effect they have on our lives. History comes alive through the built environment, which is a tangible reminder of the past.
Walking into House of Preservation, you’ll find a very relaxing and refined space. The floral arrangements and chandelier are opulent and lavish, yet help instantly transport you out of your day-to-day and into a posh and polished place. The interior offers a very minimal, cream-colored monotone design that highlights natural materials such as limestone and plastered archways.
The last time was in 1976, when a blaze destroyed parts of the pier’s fish market, according to Kristi Hawthorne, director of the Oceanside Historical Society, who wrote a brief history of the pier for the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. The city engineer is assessing the damage and evaluating when the pier might reopen to the public. Despite the pier’s battered history, Hawthorne said, the city’s residents have always been determined to rebuild because it is a part of the local identity. The pier was originally built as a commercial shipping wharf to bring business to Oceanside, which was incorporated the year the pier opened. But two years later the wharf was destroyed in a large storm and rebuilt four years later as a sightseeing pier with iron pilings.
